Budapest Nightlife

Introduction:

When the clock ticks 12, people of Budapest know how to transform the city into a socialite’s heaven. Budapest’s nightlife has no definite district for entertainment, as the assorted nightlife spreads throughout the city; you can choose from pubs, jazz bars, dance clubs, cocktail bars or casinos. The new upsurge of entertainment is characterized by the ‘ruin pubs’. Live music, unique atmosphere, charming retro décor, and late opening hours make these places popular for the unique nightlife. Nightclubs in Budapest are not exactly ‘Vegas-style’ but if you are dying to try your luck while enjoying a Budapest vacation, visit one of the casinos located in a luxury hotel. With a little bit of luck you may break even for the trip. If you’re looking for a more extreme experience, check out the party boats that depart from 22.30 onwards every Friday and Saturday from the heart of the city. This is one trip you’ll be sure to share on Instagram! If you’d like to hear some jazz on the water, the Columbus boat is the answer. Besides its restaurant, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of Buda Castle to the accompaniment of contemporary jazz music.

If you’re a night owl who’s planning to stay out late, it’s important to live close to the city center, because nobody likes to spend a long time travelling back to the hotel once the party’s over. Choosing a downtown hotel will allow you to have a shower and get off to sleep in no time at all. Budapest nightlife is great: there is something interesting for everybody and which fits all budgets. Bars and disco, pubs and historical places that can be chic or popular are found as a source of Budapest Nightlife. Budapest is truly magnificent at night especially on a warm summer day.

History:

In the early 2000s, ruin bars became new symbols of contemporary nightlife in Budapest. Of course, ruin bars are not about the dangers of having party in a deteriorating environment, but much rather about utilizing the unused areas of the city before investors come. In this sense ruin bars are temporary and are surrounded by a historical uniqueness. This period of time will not last forever, but will not soon go away either, since the downtown itself is relatively large compared to Prague and Vienna, Budapest’s population and geographical city  size is nearly the double and it has many undiscovered ruin places.

Experiencing nightlife of Budapest:

The atmosphere together with the furniture, paintings and floor provides an extraordinary service environment for the youth here to explore the Budapest Nightlife. The cultural memory of built heritage is a different case, because these districts were touched by multiculturalism, despite the fact that today they are left for being dilapidated. Originally the population was mixed German, Slovakian, Jewish and Hungarian, but today the houses and sites are empty.

Nightlife of Budapest can be described as a part of the socialization process of the youth at least by the tools of late modern Hungarian social sciences. In this sense, the context of the mainstream line is represented by the transformation of cultural venues from a conventional room to a late modern cultural space. Besides the transformation of physical space, cultural habits also change generations. It is reflected in leisure time statistics and the number and frequency of visits to cultural institutions. Changes have positive and negative effects on the lifestyle and the physical and mental health of the youth. In this short communication I proposed to give a general description of the process and a brief analysis of current processes in the physical space, life style and leisure time usage.

Places like A38 Ship combine alternative rock and visual arts as well. A common characteristic to the 1990s is that there is a restaurant in these places. Thirdly, a new form of pubs that were called ruin bars or ruin gardens were created in the mid-2000s. These are the late modern age alternatives to traditional cafés and bars. In most cases ruin bars and alternative places combine art and music with food and drinks, and prefer creating a kind of atmosphere with old photos or second hand furniture, creative wall paintings and innovative signals (toilet by large Lego/Play figures). Another important but probably not local specialty is that entertainment areas have been built after urban rehabilitation projects. These are the recent trends in the field of the conditions of nightlife in Budapest. It is also typical that the new artists come on stage; I mean DJs and rock bands (or both).

Traditional institutions like operas, concert halls and cinemas are losing their audience whereas only theatres hold the fort as the highlight of Budapest nightlife. These visits to traditional institutions are not lost, but much rather taken to ruin bars and alternative places. At least habits are still strong in the direction of spending leisure time with friends. Unfortunately official statistics do not reflect it because they focus on traditional cultural institutions, therefore ruin bars and music halls are not considered in them. Luckily youth researches to pay attention to new trends in the habits of the youth, they list bars and pubs in youth statistics and polls but they are not interested in specifying bars and pubs in a more detailed way. Nevertheless, new trends are based on easily available manifestations of fashion and the online music revolution (downloading opportunities).

Regarding cultural space, nightlife in Budapest cannot be discussed without mentioning these special types of institution: ruin pubs or gardens, traditional discotheque playing euro-disco and techno and rave parties on streets and special places.

Variety of venues makes nightlife exciting and entertaining; however, physical spaces are just one dimension of nightlife researches. Nevertheless, the link between nightlife and urban design, nightlife and cultural memory and nightlife and industry creates the opportunity to research nightlife in a multi-disciplinary way. Therefore available sources for researching nightlife in Hungary reflect historical and sociological characteristics and a scientific approach as well.

Some of the best places for your stay to explore Budapest Nightlife:

As the sun sets over the Danube, Budapest’s ruin pubs and wine bars begin to buzz. Locals and tourists flock to the famed 7th district for a hit of the city’s lively nightlife. Dinner cruises fill up the Danube. Cultural performances entertain those looking for a high-brow evening. And the city’s nightclubs, cocktail bars, and pubs burst to life.

  • The 7th district (Erzsebetvaros) is considered one of the best places to party in Budapest. More specifically, what most people would define as the ‘party area Budapest’ falls within the inner part of the 7th district, located between Karoly krt and Erzsebet krt. Here the entire area is filled with bars, restaurants, and clubs; there are a few clusters and famous parts of the district that draw most people!
  • A38 is known to be one of the coolest clubs in the city is the reincarnation of a Ukrainian carrier ship – a barge on the Danube with live music and an open-air rooftop. Wobble to reggae, hip-hops, dancehall, club house, and electro. Live concerts are commonly organized on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, but there are various programs throughout the week. It has renowned status because of its outdoor and indoor stages which host artists and bands from almost all genres including pop, rock, alternative, jazz, electro, and progressive styles. Experience your best Budapest nightlife here.
  • For a fairly low-key Budapest night out, Kazinczy utca is a great bet. This is mainly because of Szimpla, the most famous ruin bar in the city, which calls Kazinczy Street its home. With Szimpla at its epicenter, Kazinczy has grown into one of several popular restaurants and bar streets in Budapest, giving you plenty of selection in terms of spots to choose from.
  • Fröccsterasz doesn’t pretend to be more than a pub terrace with the prices neither over-the-top, nor overtly cheap. This open-air bar is found right in the middle of town. The appeal is that here you can immerse yourself completely in the buzz of Budapest’s iconic Erzsébet Square. This place is popular with locals and foreigners alike, but before you head off check if it’s open as it’s a seasonal venue that generally only opens in the warmer months.
  • Grandio Bar is a popular Ruin Pub with an inward square. The table-tennis room made on the ground floor always seems to be full of people. Grandio’s decoration is quite unique – the entrance reminds one of Henri ‘Customs Officer’ Rousseau, there is a huge carrot in the courtyard, and there is a big shovel painted on the wall. There is a hostel on site too.
  • Fregatt is one of the oldest pubs in Budapest. It is named as a rock and roll pub and there is live music every weekend, usually starting from Thursday.
  • A small (tiny) English style pub with a short menu of really good Hungarian food based on the owners’ own recipes known as English Polo Club representing you live music. If you don’t mind the smoke, give this place a try, as it’s a great local hangout.

A spa party, escape room, and beer bike during your visit are some of the most popular to do activities in Budapest.

  • Szechenyi thermal bath hosts the most famous spa party, and you can book tickets online (book in advance, as they sell out quickly). Even if you don’t go for the party, it’s worth going to the bath to enjoy and relax during your trip, and you can buy full-day passes in advance to skip the queue. It’s one of the most popular attractions here.
  • An escape room, which is really popular here and there you find hundreds of scenarios to choose from. Teams are limited to 5 or 6, so you’ll need to book multiple scenarios at the same time.
  • Beer bikes are also very popular here for stag dos, although I haven’t tried but I can assure it is worth experiencing Budapest nightlife. There are a number of companies out there, so do your research in advance to figure out the best option for your trip, including how many of you there are on the stag do.
  • Eleszto is one of the favorite ruin pubs, although it’s a bit off the tourist track. The pub has different stations around a central courtyard. At each station, you can buy local craft beer, wine, or tapas.
  • Csendes Vintage Bar & Cafe is another desired Budapest ruin bar. Mostly locals hang out here, and it has a pub atmosphere perfect for a long chat with a friend. The wine they serve is fröccs (wine spritzers) is of a reasonably high quality, making it a good spot to try this favorite Budapest drink. The main location is indoors, but they have a nearby wine bar garden area in the summer as well.
  • Hotel Moments Budapest enjoys a romantic location on Andrássy Avenue, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its breathtaking neo-Renaissance architecture. For honeymoon trips or milestone anniversaries, splurge on a stay in the Basilica Suite, with its private terrace views of St. Stephen’s Basilica. The hotel offers a complimentary gourmet breakfast buffet, while cozy Bistro Fine serves tasty local and international cuisine. There’s a lounge bar, and a sauna and fitness room perfect for quality relaxation time with your loved one.
  • Hungarian State Opera House is a sample of an array of productions from recitals or ballets, to festivals and live music productions. You can check into their website to look out the newest local plays as well as traveling stage productions.
  • Experience the peaceful nightlife of Budapest is to spend an afternoon or evening is walking along one of Hungary’s most beloved bridges, the Chain Bridge. From here you get an amazing view of the Parliament buildings, the water below, and castle hill. Perfect for photo taking, an early morning walk with no one around, or just a simple and easy connection driving or walking from West Budapest to East Budapest.
  • Hotel Palazzo Zichy is centrally located in a walking distance from three metro stations. Also, Keleti railway station is only 2 stops away by underground. This hotel features a walking distance from the Danube River, Buda Castle and the Hungarian Parliament building, a perfect district for shopping with lots of boutiques and souvenir shops. Don’t miss to take a stroll along Váci utca, the most famous pedestrian and shopping street. Transport here is convenient with several metro stations to get around the city. Three of the metro lines cross here at Deák Ferenc tér. Also, Nyugati Railway station is a just a stone’s throw away. You’ll be close to most of the trendy bars, cafés and gourmet restaurants.
  • Aria Hotel has been designed inspired by music. The lavish atmosphere of the rooms makes you feel like you’re staying in a palace. Yet, at the same time, you’re embraced with the comfort of a private residence. It features a rooftop bar and a wine and cheese reception. To really feel at home, the hotel provides complimentary breakfast, a handy smartphone with unlimited calls and a selection of international newspapers. It is included as one of the best places to stay and experience the great nightlife of Budapest.
  • Hungary’s most iconic sight sampled with its top local brews is known as cruising down the Danube. In this craft beer cruise, you will get to experience tasting up to 5 different types of Hungarian beer. During which you’ll be provided with more descriptive introductions about each type and you’ll also have a chance to ask questions about your drinks. This will help you decide which brew you’d like to have a full pint of. Take your pick upstairs to the open-air top deck and marvel at the Gothic and Renaissance styles of architecture that line along Danube River including the House of Parliament, Chain Bridge, and Buda Castle. For the night cruise, be sure to catch the live band at 7pm for added excitement that makes this tour truly a must-do activity in Budapest.
  • The ruin pub area is the party area of Budapest, travelers and young people alike flock to this area to drink and party, but also to check out the latest vintage clothes, trendy boutique hotels and farmers’ markets on the weekends. The main party area is very small and composed of some famous local bars but you should be exploring further than the small area. You may easily find the next hidden Budapest hot spot!
