Looking for a cool water park in the capital? Pack up and take the whole family for a ride – we’re about to show you the top 7 family-friendly water parks in Budapest.

1. Aquaréna Mogyoród

Why keep the best for last? Aquarena is a major league player while the rest on our list are minor league ballers. This water park is the largest in its category in the whole country: with over 1,5 kilometers of slides stretching across a vast green space of 11.5 ha, it offers leisure, entertainment, and relaxation opportunities for the whole family.

26 slides, 9 different pools, jacuzzi, massage and regular events including interactive games for the youngsters – your head gets dizzy just by going through Aquarena’s offerings. And if you do get tired of all the options, grab a snack or even a full meal at the water park’s own restaurant.

Watch out – Aquarena is closed for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 situation, however, they do plan to open again for the 2021 season.

The flipside

Mogyoród is not exactly located in the heart of Budapest (actually, it’s just outside the city limits), so having your own ride is definitely the comfiest option.

2. Paskál

After getting to know the largest entry on our list, buckle up for a more modest contestant. Paskál bath is the youngest kid on the block: it was built in 1989, making it as old as the modern Hungarian republic. So, what to do there? Its outdoor pools (4, to be precise) have a capacity for people and offer pools for children, leisure, or relaxation.

If you’re looking for a more active way of spending your time, Paskál offers aqua fitness sessions, sport fields and a unique geothermal sauna as well. Fine, the latter doesn’t require active participation, but who can say no to spending a few minutes in a geothermal sauna?

The flipside

Zugló (aka district 14) is a little far from the city center, and – unlike some of the following entries – isn’t situated in a particularly eye-catching neighborhood.

3. Római beach

Do you know why Rómaifürdő is called Római (“Roman” in Hungarian)? Well, this beach has been around for the last 2000 years, and as the old saying goes: “when in Budapest, do as the Romans.”

While you’re fact-checking the saying above, let us bombard you with some of the sweetest-sounding tidbits about Római. The beach boasts 5 different slides, from the rookie ones (kids and family) to the downright crazy ones (Kamikaze – do we have to introduce that one?). Apart from the 3 large pools, Római also offers options for those who want to stay dry: playground, fitness park, sports fields – you name it.

The flipside

Római is one of the most popular spots during summer, so expect it to be pretty crowded during the weekend.

4. Lupa beach

It’s a little unfair to bring an actual lakeside beach to the contest, but you can’t spell waterside recreation in Budapest without mentioning Lupa Beach – and that’s exactly why it ended up on our list of top water parks. If you’re looking for a place where you set up a camp and spend the rest of your (and your family’s) summer, look no further. Lupa has way too many options for those seeking to do a little more than mere sunbathing.

Scuba diving? Check. Balancing on a SUP? No problem. Flyboard? Probably nowhere else in the capital. Jetovator? We had to google that, but they have that, too. But no worries, if you’re planning to spend your time in a more orthodox fashion, Lupa’s floating water park will surely deliver.

The flipside

The hefty price tag. As you’d expect, Lupa is not a budget option, so make sure you visit their site – especially if you’re planning to take the whole family.

5. Csepeli strandfürdő

Here’s the thing about Csepel: most locals will probably frown if you tell them you’ve just had a great time at Csepeli strandfürdő as this part of the city hasn’t really been the fanciest neighborhood in the past. Fortunately, that’s been changing for the better lately.

The beach itself is situated right next to the Danube: amidst the idyllic scenery, you’ll find 4 huge pools (for children and adults alike), plus you can treat yourself with a massage or a few minutes of Finnish sauna as well.

The flipside

While the neighborhood might be getting more popular, getting there is still a little time-consuming. Taking a car is by far your safest bet.

6. Pünkösdfürdő

Wondering what that strange word stands for? It’s “Bath of Pentecost” – named promptly after it first yielded thermal water on the day of Pentecost almost a century ago. Ever since, it has been a sweet, quiet retreat for locals: while it did go through a major renovation in 2002, it still offers a serene environment for those who want the water park experience without the usual buzz.

Pünkösdfürdő boasts 3 pools, but it’s far from all: the vast green fields offer a perfect spot for sports, and the beach frequently organizes kids’ camps during summer.

The flipside

Just like its bigger sibling, Rómaifürdő, Pünkösdfürdő might get a tiny bit crowded during the hottest days in summer.

7. Csillaghegy baths

You know what they say about the Buda side of the capital, right? Lush, green environment, fancy villas, and a peaceful neighborhood. Well, Csillaghegy is basically fusing all these into a rare experience for beachgoers – that’s also why it earned a spot on our list of top water parks in Budapest. Despite the modern features, this water park shows you how locals used to spend their hot summer days over a century ago.

All right, so what does Csillaghegy offer? 3 different outdoor pools for kids and adults, a fitness park, a playground, sport fields, and a whole indoor area with pools, slides, sauna, and salt bath. If you get parched while making a splash, feel free to grab a drink or even a whole meal at the local kiosk.

Opening hours:

Swimming pool: 7:00 – 19:00

Beach: 9:00 – 19:00

Wellness, children zone and sauna world: 11:00-19:00 (from 1st of August: 9:00 – 19:00)

Slides: 11:00-18:00

The flipside

Just like in the case of several entries on our list, Csillaghegy is a little difficult to access, so we’d suggest driving to the location.
