Spectacular Christmas Light & Drone Show at Buda Castle (2025)

Budapest has truly outdone itself this holiday season. While the Christmas markets at Vörösmarty Square and the Basilica are famous for their food and crafts, the real visual magic is happening up on Castle Hill. The Hungarian National Gallery has become a massive canvas for one of the most stunning light projection shows in the city, accompanied by a breathtaking drone display lighting up the winter sky.

If you enjoy light art, you should also check out our guide to Lumina Park Budapest on Margaret Island, which offers a different but equally magical experience. However, if you are looking for a free evening program in the historic center, the Savoyai Terrace in the Buda Castle District is the place to be.

The Building Comes Alive: Projection Mapping

The facade of the Hungarian National Gallery (Building A, B, C of the Royal Palace) is transformed by colorful animated light paintings. The projection mapping technique uses the architectural features of the building—columns, domes, and windows—to create 3D illusions. One moment the palace looks like it’s made of gingerbread, the next it is covered in festive red and gold wrapping paper.

The centerpiece is the majestic dome, which stands out as a beacon over the Danube.

Walking around the terrace gives you different perspectives. The wide-angle views are particularly impressive, showing the sheer scale of the installation against the dark winter sky.

Sky Art: The Christmas Drone Show

As if the building projection wasn’t enough, the sky above the castle fills with hundreds of synchronized drones. These flying lights form intricate holiday shapes, floating eerily and beautifully in the darkness. It is a modern twist on the Star of Bethlehem.

This year’s formations included religious and festive symbols that could be seen from kilometers away.

The Angel & The Virgin Mary

One of the most touching moments was the formation of a giant angel with spreading wings, followed by the outline of the Virgin Mary. The precision of the drones creates a “constellation” effect that is hard to capture in photos, but absolutely magical in person.

The Star & The Shepherd

The show tells the story of Christmas through these floating lights. We saw the Star of Bethlehem leading the way, and a charming shepherd with his sheep.

The Buda Castle District is easily accessible from the city center.

  • By Bus: Take Bus 16 from Deák Ferenc tér or Széll Kálmán tér to “Dísz tér”.
  • By Funicular: Take the historic Buda Castle Funicular (Sikló) from Clark Ádám tér for a scenic ride up the hill.
  • On Foot: You can walk up the stairs/paths from the Castle Garden Bazaar (Várkert Bazár).

Pro Tip: It can get very windy and cold up on the terrace. Dress in warm layers, and grab a cup of mulled wine from the vendors nearby to keep your hands warm while you enjoy the show.
