Budapest has several baths to offer, that’s for sure. But there’s no bath quite like Pünkösdfürdő: this thermal spa is enveloped by the most illustrious flora and fauna you’ll see in the entire city. Read on to find out why Pünkösdfürdő is an ideal spot both for a romantic getaway or just a peaceful afternoon after a tiring day of sightseeing.

A historical recap

As usual, let’s see how Pünkösdfürdő came to being. It was roughly a century ago when drillings began in the area: as several other thermal springs have been found around (like Rómaifürdő or Csillaghegy), locals were pretty sure they would stumble upon more. Unsurprisingly, in 1934 on the day of Pentecost, the first drops of warm thermal water came to the surface all the way from 550 meters below – quite fittingly, the bath was named after this prominent celebration (“Pünkösd” means Pentecost in Hungarian). After over 7 decades, the spa was finally renovated to fit the needs of the modern beachgoer. Today, Pünkösdfürdő is a secluded and well-equipped spa that beats its competition not because of its wide range of services but thanks to its atmosphere.

A historical recap

As usual, let’s see how Pünkösdfürdő came to being. Meet the beach

So, why choose Pünkösdfürdő? Well, how about a serene, lush field with a bunch of thermal pools in the middle, enframed by a gorgeous set of pergolas with running roses all over it? This spa is really one of a kind: it’s not as busy as neighboring Rómaifürdő, it isn’t as small as Csillaghegy, yet it offers all the pros these two have: a vast, green space for you to relax, and several thermal pools to recharge your batteries.

Pools

As of today, there are 3 different pools in Pünkösdfürdő. First, there’s a big thermal pool equipped with neck showers and a soothing drift for relaxing your muscles and just chilling through the day. Kids also get to enjoy the thermal water: thanks to its dedicated splash pool, your little ones will keep themselves busy. And finally, a separate, gradually deepening open-air swimming pool make sure that you can both cool down or swim a little.

Services

Just like in the case of any other bath or spa in Budapest, Pünkösdfürdő also offers plenty of extra services. There’s nothing quite like sweating for minutes in the dry sauna only to finally splash in the cooling waves of the swimming pool! Apart from that, the vast green fields offer plenty of space for sports and other recreational activities. Plus, you’ll both find sunbeds and an equal amount of shade in the meadows, so you can either get a nice tan or relax in the cooling shadows of the pergola. The spa also has several lockers and changing cabins to boost your comfort levels during your stay.

Fun facts

Pünkösdfürdő is a hybrid of some sorts: it’s both a classic bath and a beach at the same time. The latter is proved by its kiosk’s offerings: you’ll get to taste the famed lángos amongst others, which is a typical dish at beaches around Lake Balaton or Lake Tisza.

Getting there

Take HÉV line 5 (the purple one) at Batthány square and get off at Békásmegyer. From here, you can either walk (15 minutes) or take bus line 34 and get off Pünkösdfürdő stop. Alternatively, you can also take a cab or drive there in a rental car

Prices

Pünkösdfürdő is probably one of the cheapest spas in town. With a single ticket costing as little as 1900 HUF (6€), getting there might cost you more than entering the premises. For more info on ticket costs, check out the spa’s pricing list here.

The flipside

At this point, you might have already guessed that Pünkösdfürdő is one of the more remote spas in the city. Getting there with public transportation takes time, and like we stated above, your ride just one way might cost more than your ticket.
